Walk any blockchain event and you attend two conferences at once. In the main hall, tokens seek narratives and narratives seek exit liquidity. In the side rooms, engineers compare notes on custody, data pipelines, settlement and compliance tooling — and that second conference gets more interesting every year. The technology has stopped auditioning. Payment rails settle real volume, on-chain data is queryable at scale, and the tooling around wallets and contracts has become genuinely good.
The data layer is the quiet winner
The most useful conversations we had were about analytics: funds that need portfolio and risk views across chains and exchanges, founders who need token activity explained to a board, desks that need alerts grounded in indexed on-chain events rather than social media sentiment. The raw data is public — that is the novelty of the asset class — but public does not mean usable. Turning chain data into dashboards a decision-maker can act on is straightforward software engineering, and demand for it outlasts every market cycle.
What businesses actually need is smaller than they fear
Most companies exploring the space do not need a token, a chain or a metaverse strategy; the honest advisors at these events say so out loud. They need clean answers to narrow questions: can we accept this payment method, what do we hold, what is it worth right now, what must we report, and can our accounting see it? Each answer is an integration and a dashboard, not a revolution — which is precisely why it gets built and stays built.
